Continuing my look at the Clarins Summer Breeze range, here’s their Joli Rouge Long-Wearing Moisturizing Lipstick in 734 – Poppy Red:

Clarins Poppy Red Lipstick

This is a high-shine lipstick, which, Clarins say, uses “Maxi Lip Complex to help plump and hydrate for full, soft and supple lips”. I don’t notice any additional “plumpness” to my lips when I use this, but I can confirm that everything else is true: this is a super-moisturing product which is really comfortable to wear, and also very easy to apply. I’m used to using rather “high maintenance” bright reds, like MAC’s Ruby Woo, so the fact that this just glides on effortlessly makes it a real joy for me to use. Oh, and it also smells gorgeous, with a fruity scent which almost makes me want to eat it. (Not really.)

It also lives up to the “long-wearing” promise, and as it’s very glossy and shiny, I was actually rather surprised by how long it lasts. No, you’re not going to get through the day without touch-ups, but I still have a trace of colour even after coffee and a snack, and one of the best things about it is that it wears off evenly, so you’re not left with the dreaded “ring of fire” which some long-wear lipsticks can create.

As for the colour, although both the name and the colour in the tube suggest that this will be a classic, bright red, I find it quite pink-toned on me. I’ve done my best to try and capture what it looks like on in the photos below, but, as always, I found it quite difficult to get a true reflection of the shade, so I’ve included a few shots taken in different light conditions, to try to give you an idea:

This is a bit of a change from my usual bright red, and the lighter, brighter pink feels very Spring-like to me, which I like.  I would definitely re-purchase this shade, and I’m keen to try a few of the others too, because I really like the moisturising effect and long-lasting colour this provides.

This is £16.50 from Clarins, and there are lots and lots of shades to choose from!

[Disclosure: I received this is a free-of-charge sample. All opinions are my own.]
  1. I doooo love that last picture of you. You look so gorgeous and I’m admire your green eyes. So perfect with your haircolour!

Even though I’m no redhead at all I do like that lipstick colour, just make feel like spring is coming soon (hopefully) and I think it would be suited for me too, even though I’m just a regular blonde/blue eyes 😉

    1. Oh, thanks! My eyes are actually really weird: they’re an odd mix of green and brown – most of the time they look brown, but other times turn really green! I wish they were this shade all the time, I like it much better 🙂

I think this shade would look great on a blonde! It does feel really Spring-like to me – I can’t wait to wear it with all of my summery clothes!

      1. If you think it would suite blondes I might be forced to try it. When I saw it in the tube I thought: Nope, as I’m extremely pale (and blonde) and also no longer in the first flush of youth, which makes slightly matt bright reds like Ruby Woo very ageing. But on your lips it def does look slightly pinkish without being too girly. Thanks for the review – will check it out when I’m near a Clarins counter.

  2. That lipstick looks soo pretty!.
What eyeliner have you used? It really makes your eyes pop!.I have pretty much the same colourings as you so would love to try it.

    1. Hi Olivia,

I took these photos quite a while ago, so I can’t remember which brand this was – it’s just a plain black, though: my guess is that it’s either MAC Fluidline or Urban Decay 24/7!
