The Birthday Dress

It was my birthday on Monday. I’m not a big fan of birthdays (Or, indeed, anything that reminds me that I’m getting older, and yet no wiser. See also: New Year’s Eve), but I AM a big fan of dresses, and an even bigger fan of dresses with full skirts and polka dots, so my gift from Terry this year was a particularly good one.

Now, before you get too impressed, no, he didn’t pick it out himself. I mean, he’s good, but he’s not THAT good, you know? So I may have dropped a few hints, and by that I mean, “He asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and I sent him a link to the dress, with instructions on which size to get me.”

(Don’t worry, he’ll do the same when it’s his turn. He probably won’t ask me to get him a spot-print dress, though.)

I honestly didn’t expect to get to wear this dress for weeks yet. As you probably gathered from the whining-about-the-weather I was doing in my last post (And, OK, the one before it), it’s been absolutely FREEZING lately, and it’s also been windy and rainy, so cotton dresses didn’t seem to loom large in my future. In fact, I’d actually started to suspect that I’d somehow managed to slip into some kind of alternate reality from everyone else, because while I’ve been considering buying a thermal vest, just to walk the dog in (I’d wear the vest, obviously, not the dog. He says he’s happy just to stick to his usual fur coat.), my fellow fashion bloggers all seemed to have fully transitioned into spring. There they were, with their bare legs and their cute little dresses. And there I was, entering into the eleventy-first month of winter, and wondering if I’d ever be warm again. HOW DO THEY DO IT, THE FASHION BLOGGERS? How do they get to experience the seasons before everyone else does? And what do I have to do to get in on that?

Well, as it happened, I didn’t have to wait too long to finally get in on spring, because, on the morning of my birthday, I woke up to blue skies and temperatures that were just warm enough to let me wear my birthday dress, albeit with a cardigan over the top, and the ubiquitous fishnet tights. I didn’t even flash my underwear at passers-by or anything.

All things considered, it was a pretty good day.

It’s my 30th exactly one month today and I’m quite looking forward to it :) well now I am anyway. Probably wont say the same when I hit 37. Happy Birthday and the dress is lovely. I’ve got the Collectif Claudette dress for my birthday, not sure where I’ll wear it…maybe for work :)

  • A belated happy birthday! Decent(-ish) weather seems like reason enough to celebrate it this year. x

I’m not a big fan either-mine is tomorrow. It’s not that I care about a “new number”, but I don’t like a big fuss. Hope yours was a great anyway!

Same here – I particularly hate hate that thing where everyone gathers round and stares at you while you open gifts: so awkward! Happy birthday for tomorrow anyway!

  • Alison S says:

Happy birthday. Love the dress and shoes!

  • Happy birthday. Sorry to hear you’re not a fan of birthdays. I LOVE birthdays! Glad to hear the sun was shining on your birthday and you were able to wear your birthday dress. It’s funny because my husband does the same for me on my birthday for birthday presents… have me pick it out and he buys it… it’s a pretty nifty arrangement if I do say so myself. While you lose the surprise factor at least you know you will really love what you get! :)

I feel like the answer to your last question is “not live in Scotland”! I am just delighted it’s actually still light when I leave the office these days.

I knew I forgot something this week! Happy happy birthday (or belated un-birthday in any case!). Glad it was a good one, what with weather and dresses :) xx

    Doom.

All I ever do is put my money back into the company that pays my wages. At least free delivery to the store I work at and 10% staff discount is a perk. And it was payday yesterday…

I’ll be picking this dress up on Monday ;)

Love love love the dress – May have to go order it! Have you seen they also do a blue version in chevrons …. Trying to justify buying both now!
But my excuses is I literally have no clothes (I know everyone says that!) recently lost a lot of weight and had to get rid of everything I had as it was all massive! So now trying to buy beautiful new clothes

Love this dress! I saw one similar in an Ann Taylor store about a week ago and now I can’t find it online. Glad you got to enjoy wearing it sooner rather than later. You’re lovely as always! :-)

Happy belated birthday, Amber! Hope you had a good one :)

Sneakily really pleased to find out this is a F&F dress – I used to love revealing to friends that one or two of my items were F&F as opposed to their Topshop guess! They have some great pieces from time to time and this dress is no exception.

I’ve been meaning to ask you for a while, you regularly wear amazing dresses and skirts like this one with a lovely vintage 50s flare style. Do you have netting underneath them when you wear them and take pictures or is it just the blustering Scottish wind helping you out by adding volume to those skirts?

I wasn’t wearing anything under this one (Er, that sounds bad: I was wearing underwear, obviously) and it wasn’t windy that day – the dress is cut to be really full, as are most of the skirts I’ve been wearing lately, so they don’t really need any extra help! I do have a couple of petticoats which I wear from time to time (I always try to list them in the outfit description if I do), but they’re not very practical for day-to-day wear, so it’s been a while since I’ve worn one!

  • Georgina says:

    Beautiful dress!
I think bloggers do it by taking their photos in the springy bare legs and cotton dresses, shivering violently while they do then charge back inside to put on fleece lined tights and six jumpers. And then photoshop out the goosebumps ;)

  • Stacy says:

That is such a beautiful dress! In fact so gorgeous that, like a few others here, I just ordered one to be delivered to the Netherlands! (Great that they do international delivery!) I just hope it looks half as good on me as it does on you!

(And of course – belated happy birthday!)
