Younique Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes Mascara| Before and After plus review

I’ve been fascinated by Younique Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes ever since I first heard about it, and a couple of weeks ago I finally got to try out the mascara for myself, thanks to Younique seller Vivienne McComb, who, as some of you may recall, was a blog sponsor back in November.

3D Fiber Lashes is a mascara – but it’s a little bit more than that, too. The first clue that this is more than just your average mascara comes with the presentation box, which contains two shiny black tubes:

This is essentially a lash extension system, and, as such, its similar in concept to Too Faced’s Better Than False Lashes, or one of the many other products out there which allow you to brush fiber extensions onto your lashes, and seal them in with mascara. This two-step process is incredibly effective at creating that “false lash” effect, but it’s definitely not the easiest mascara in the world to apply, so here’s how to do it…

HOW TO APPLY YOUNIQUE MOODSTRUCK 3D FIBER LASHES

There are two separate tubes in the box: one containing the fibers, and one containing the ‘transplanting gel’. Before you get to either of those, however, you need to start off with a single coat of your regular mascara. Here I am without mascara: brace yourselves!

And here I am with one coat of Lancome Hypnose Drama (mine is the waterproof version, in case anyone cares, but you can use any mascara at all for this stage…):

I decided to do one eye at a time, partly to give you a better idea of the difference the product makes, but also because I think that’s the best way to apply this particular mascara: i.e. go through all of the steps on one eye, and then repeat on the other side, rather than doing step one on both eyes, then step two on both eyes, etc etc. Unfortunately this method makes me look a little bit “special”, but I’m sure you’re all used to that by now. I have absolutely no excuse for the startled expression, meanwhile: that’s just my face.

Once you’ve applied your regular mascara, you have to let it dry completely, before starting to apply the Transplanting Gel, which is the taller of the two tubes:

This goes on much like any regular mascara: it’s perhaps a little thicker and gloopier, but it’s not at all difficult to apply, and actually creates quite a nice effect on its own. You’re not going to do that, though, because while the transplanting gel is still wet, you’re going to go in with the fibers:

The fibers are exactly what the name suggests: tiny little natural fibers which cling to the transplanting gel on your lashes, making them look longer and thicker. If you’re used to using the Too Faced mascara I mentioned above, or any other fiber extensions, this part of the process should come fairly easily. If not, it might take a bit of practice to get used to it, and it’ll help to have an eyelash comb handy, so you can gently comb through the lashes and stop them from clumping:

Er, as you can see, I DIDN’T have a lash comb handy, and it DID go a bit clumpy. (Note to self: buy lash comb…) I make the mistakes so you don’t have to, folks! The fibers are clearly visible at this stage, but don’t worry, you still have one final step to complete, which involves adding another coat of Transplanting Gel to seal the fibers into place, and complete your look:

Oh yeah, and you’ll want to do the other eye, too, at this point:

Again, I could have done with using a lash comb here and, again, you’ll know not to make that mistake if you decide to try this yourself. It’s lucky I was here, really.

AND THE VERDICT?

I think the main thing to note about this product is that it’s not like “normal” mascaras, and nor is it supposed to be. It takes a bit more time and patience to apply, and if you’re not used to using fiber extensions, there’s a bit of a learning curve involved, too. With that said, although it’s definitely not the easiest product to use, it’s not particularly tricky, either. My main issue with it is the clumping which can sometimes occur after applying the fibers: as I said, an eyelash comb would obviously help with that (and applying the fibers just to the very tips of the lashes will help, too), but even so, if you’re going for the natural look, this isn’t the product for you. It’s also a little bit hit and miss: I’ve been using Too Faced Better Than False Lashes for a couple of years now, and I’m very used to this kind of application process, but sometimes when I use this it’ll work perfectly, other times it’ll be super-clumpy

This is designed to create maximum impact, dramatic length, and to basically make you look like you’re wearing false lashes. For that reason, I love it – but even I would say it’s probably not a “daytime” mascara for me: you can obviously make it a little more subtle (or, alternatively, give it even more impact), depending on how many coats you apply, and how generous you are with the fiber application, but I’ve been mostly saving it for evenings and special occasions.
