black pointed ballet flats by Call It SpringNow that spring is well and truly here, it’s fitting that today’s post features a brand called Call It Spring.

Now, I’d probably love this brand just for the name alone, because the fact is, spring is my favourite season, style-wise. Yes, I know it’s supposed to be autumn, and I’m probably going to have to hand in my Fashion Blogger card for choosing spring instead, but I just love it. The daffodils, the shoes, the longer daylight hours, the shoes, that “freshly laundered,” feel that the world gets around this time of year…  I love it all: but it’s mostly the shoes, let’s be honest.

Footwear is the main reason I struggle so much with autumn/winter dressing – because, no matter how happy I am with whichever outfit I’ve managed to pull together, I always feel that boots and tights will instantly spoil it, just a little bit. This is why at least 80% of my shoe collection is made up of summer shoes (even although summer lasts approximately 5 minutes here – if we’re lucky), and it’s also the reason I spend the entire winter counting down to the first outfit of the year that doesn’t require me to add a pair of thick tights or clumpy boots just to make it wearable.

Well, here it is: the official First Outfit of Spring, consisting of black capri-length jeans and a soft pink trench coat. With this look, I went for a pair of classic black pointed flats, which are one of those shoe styles I don’t think you can have too much of, because they have the ability to instantly add that “Audrey Hepburn” effect to anything you wear with them. As much as I love spring, there’s no denying that these transitional seasons can be kind of tricky, weather-wise: ballet flats are a good solution to that, because, as well as working with just about anything, they also occupy that, “Warmer than sandals but cooler than boots,” sweet spot, which makes them really versatile, too.

These would obviously work with tights or socks, if I really needed them, but they were warm enough for an early spring day, and although I’ve styled them fairly casually here, I also find flats like these a really useful way to dress down something like a full skirt or dress – which I fully intend to wear them with too, because obviously.

For this outfit, meanwhile, I’ve tried to inject a touch of spring into a classic, transitional look: I always associate trench coats with spring, and they also work really well with pointed flats. This one, however, is a little bit special, because this one is pink. Which makes it totally different from the other 685 near-identical trench coats I own. Ahem. (I’m joking: I only have five trenchcoats. And only two are identical.) As for the shoes, they’re from the Call It Spring SS17 collection, which is stocked online, and in 60 stores around the country : I got mine from Debenhams, and had a really hard time choosing between these and some of the gorgeous gold sequined versions which are available. In the end, I went for the classic black, because I’ve been really feeling that whole ‘Audrey-esque” vibe I mentioned above (Even more so than usual, I mean), and I thought they’d look good with black capri pants, which are something of an everyday uniform for me at this time of year. And, you know, every other time of year, too…

  1. I love love love ballet flats! Especially those you are wearing in this post! They looks so gorgeous and very comfy – I definitely need a pair. Oh, and of course I love your trench coat too. 😉

  2. Love the pink trench coat. Spring is my fav time of year too. I remember setting a writing assignment to year 9s (13/14 year olds) asking them to describe something that amazes them. My example was spring plants springing back into life and growth after winter.

  3. Love it! My life is a near-constant struggle to find the perfect pair of black flats and those look pretty darn perfect to me. So many have cheap materials or extra buckles/designs (which can be fine too, it’s just not what I’m looking for). When I do find a pair I like I wear them to death almost instantly and then the search begins again…

  4. I love this whole pink pastel-y / pink salmon-y and black pulled together. And you’re right. Black capri and black flats always make me think of Audrey. I think somehow, they get “associated”, that’s what my husband told me.
Very pretty, Amber. I’m looking forward to mooooorreeeee spring outfits to come! 🙂

  5. I love this outfit! 🙂 I’m not much of a skirt and dress girl myself, so I love it when you have outfits involving pants as well. This is both practical, casual and stylish all at once. Looks so effortless! Have a great weekend, Amber! <3
