pin-up inspired summer outfit: white knotted skirt and stripe skirt

stripe skirt and white knotted shirt: retro summer outfit

white knotted shirt

As you can probably tell from all of the outfit posts I’ve been doing lately, summer seems to have arrived early in Scotland this year (She said, cruelly tempting fate…), which has been both a blessing and a bit of a curse, really.

I mean, it’s MOSTLY a blessing, obviously. Some years, summer doesn’t arrive here AT ALL, and given that I spend 90% of the year complaining about how cold it is, I’m not about to start complaining when I finally get to see the sun, don’t worry. Although warm weather allows me to really make the most of my wardrobe, and finally start feeling like myself again when I get dressed in the morning, though, I have to admit that that harsh sunlight is no friend to the fashion bloggers out there: which is why these photos ended up being a bit darker and blurrier than I’d ideally like, and would probably be better if it had occurred to me to remove the rogue hair tie from my wrist before we started taking them: whoops!

Oh well: you can blame the three men who were sitting right in front of my favourite wall, and who I was much to embarrassed to start posing in front of for that (Er, not for the hair tie, obviously: I accept full responsibility for that one…): sometimes the photo Gods are just against you, and there’s not a thing you can do about it. Still, I’m sure you’ve probably seen enough photos of me in full skirts and knotted shirts by now to know that this is another one of my summer uniforms: I just really like the way the shirt makes the skirt feel a little more retro, somehow, and it’s at leastt a little bit different from my usual bardot top/other fitted t-shirt. Only a little bit, mind, but hey: I take these small victories where I can find them.

Now, who wants to bet that it’ll be pouring with rain by the time this post goes live?

  1. I don´t think the photos look dark, they feel very Summery, indeed!
Also, I do love your outfit. Generally, I don´t really like navy but you made it look bright and smart. 💕 As you said, the knotted shirt gives it some extra retro points. I need to write this tip down. Thank you, Amber!

  2. Just about to rain over here, from the looks of the sky… But I have to say it’s not been too bad weather-wise for our ‘summer’ so far! If it can just hold on until end of next week for my wedding and cut the rain out!!!

  3. Gorgeous! I love the way you wear shirts tied up like that, it’s so chic. It’s bucketing it down in Wales here today, I had to wear platform shoes to ensure my feet were above the puddles. Grab those sunny days while you can! x

    1. “Bucketing” – what a great way to describe heavy rain! That IS what my roommate’s windshield looked like in the photos he sent – as if someone was throwing buckets of water at it. I’ve used the platforms-above-puddles trick, too. At least some variation of it.

  4. Love it, navy and white are summer staples and I love knotted shirts – they scream both retro and summer

  5. Dear Amber, complaints about cold summers are known in Germany as well. This year started differently. So I was very interested to look at your maritime outfit in White and Blue. The yellow shoes highlight the summer feeling perfectly. With climate change, we might experience warmer summers in due time.

  6. The photos looked great to me and I didn’t even notice the hair tie! And who cares, it’s real life and a lot of us carry hair ties around don’t we. What’s that saying, we’re our own worst critics? 🙂

  7. I love the way these stripes curve slightly; it seems to give the skirt movement. And the yellow shoes are a great touch. I know it’s not what your clothing brands might want to hear, but I wanted to say “Thank You!” for your inspiration. Things I have seen on your blog have totally inspired me in my bedroom’s makeover for when I get my puppy. I’m doing ballerina-pink gingham check, and stripes, and bows. Very girly-girl. You made feminine (and pink) look contemporary and chic, not silly and childish, so thanks.

  8. This is such a gorgeous outfit – love the skirt!!
