GUYSGUYSGUYS, I have fixed my email newsletter, and I could not be more exited about it!

Er, in retrospect, it’s possible that “getting a life” would be a good plan around about now, but instead of getting a life, I spent part of yesterday afternoon working out how to separate my email list into different categories, and that’s what passes for fun around here these days, so let’s just go with it, shall we?

So, as I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, when I first announced my pregnancy, everyone was absolutely lovely and enthusiastic about it… but I also started to notice a lot of people unsubscribing from my email alerts, too. Now, just to be clear, I’m not remotely offended or upset by this: I mean, I HAVE obviously spent many a long night sobbing into my pillow and pulling handfuls of hair out, whilst shrieking, “WHY DOES EVERYONE HATE ME?!” but that’s fairly par for the course for me, so I wouldn’t read too much into it, really.

(That was a joke, by the way, just in case that wasn’t clear.)

(OR WAS IT?)

Forever Amber newsletterAnyway, like I said, I totally get that there are lots of reasons why people wouldn’t necessarily want to be constantly bombarded with pregnancy posts, and I did expect something like this to happen when I made the announcement. I’m also, however, really aware that there are probably quite a few people who would still like to read the regular content, and just skip over all of the pregnancy stuff, which is why I’m pleased to introduce my new-and-improved email list: TA DA!

Select categories:

I’m sensing that this was probably a bit of an anti climax for some of you. I’m sorry.

So, as you can see, when you sign up for email alerts, you can now choose which category or categories you want to receive notifications from: you can choose Β as many as you like, or there’s also an “all posts” option for those of you who are gluttons for punishment, and are content to continue receiving ALL of my ramblings in your inbox every day. The categories are pretty self-explanatory, but just for the avoidance of doubt…

FASHION…

…is for all things fashion, as I’m sure you’ll have guessed. For obvious reasons, outfit posts will have a strong maternity theme for the next few months, but I’m also planning some other fashion-related content (Advice posts, capsule wardrobes, shopping picks, etc), so don’t let that put you off. Or, you know, DO let that put you off, if you want: that’s the whole point of this newfangled category subscription, after all!

BEAUTY…

I actually don’t tend to write a huge amount of beauty-related posts, but I do have some in the pipeline at the moment, and I know I have a few subscribers who are ONLY here for the beauty posts and nothing else, so this one’s for them.

LIFESTYLE…

This category basically contains everything else on the site that isn’t covered by one of the other dedicated categories: so it’s everything from home decor, to travel, to diary posts (NOT the pregnancy ones, though – they have their own category, so this one is fairly safe!) and book reviews etc. If you click on the “Lifestyle” category at the top of the screen, it’ll give you a better idea of what you can expect from this one.

BLOGGING…

All of my blog tips and rants about social media, in one handy category.

PREGNANCY…

So, obviously this is kind of the Cursed Category in my mindΒ – the posts themselves have been some of the most popular I’ve ever written, and have generated tons of comments and pageviews, but the category itself appears to be cursed, because it was with the introduction of this category that the unsubscribes started! Anyway, if you don’t want to read about pregnancy, do not check this box – and if you DO want to read about pregnancy, well, you know what to do!

Quick admin note: if you’re already subscribing to the mailing list, and want to change your subscription to remove some categories, I’m afraid the only way to do that, as far as I can tell, is to unsubscribe from the existing newsletter (You’ll find an unsubscribe link at the bottom of each email), and then re-subscribe to your preferred category(ies). It’s a bit clunky, I know, but once it’s done, you’ll never have to think about it again. (Unless, of course, you want to change your subscription at some point, in which case you just go to the sign-up box in the sidebar, select your chosen categories, enter your email address, and you’ll get an email which will allow you to update your subscription.) If you’re an existing subscriber who DOESN’T want to change to specific categories, meanwhile, you don’t need to do anything, and will continue to receive email alerts as usual.

As for that whole ‘penpal’ thing in the title of this post, meanwhile…

For a while now, I’ve wanted to give a little something extra to my email subscribers, so, if you’re subscribing to the ”all posts” option (This includes those of you who subscribe to the existing email, and who haven’t changed your subscription), you’ll also get occasional not-on-the-blog content from me, in the form of newsletters and random emails. I’m not going to try to force myself to stick to a certain topic or schedule with these, so it could be anything from something cool I’ve seen on the internet, to a rambling email about something that’s been on my mind, that I haven’t wanted to put on the blog. So, it’ll be a little bit like having a penpal, really – just a really annoying one, who has a tendency to ramble on a bit.

Hopefully this will make it easier for those of you who are only interested in specific topics to avoid the content that doesn’t interest you, and only see the stuff that does, but if you have any questions, ask away! Oh, and don’t forget to sign up, using either the form above, or the one you’ll find in the sidebar of each post!

  1. Brilliant! (I am keeping my old subscription to “all.”)

And I’m looking forward to the random emails, too. Glad you’re feeling better.

  2. I really enjoy receiving ALL your news, I found you quite by accident when looking for foundation for pale skin. I am a pale redhead, half Scottish, with 2 very adult offspring, but I will never be a grandmother!!!
I first read about bloggers in the Candace Bushnell novel, “One Fifth Avenue”, and at that point in time couldn’t envisage ever being in possession of a computer, and of course tablets were yet to be invented!!! Here we are years down the line, and I can’t imagine now being without my tablet. I look forward to your posts, you make me laugh, and your information about modern life is quite a revelation!! Thankyou for brightening up most days.

  3. Awesome! I’m a current subscriber who won’t be changing my preferences — love them all! Can’t wait to be pen-pals!

  4. You really do seem like the most conscientious blogger; if there is ever an award for that you would win. One of the many reasons why I have continued reading your blog for so long πŸ™‚

  5. This is a really neat option for a newsletter; not changing a thing though. (I was missing them awhile back and then realized they were going into my spam box.πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ)

  6. I wouldn’t miss a thing! Looking forward to the pen pal stuff too! Now, if Facebook had done this… Oh well. They didn’t; you are brilliant.

  7. sticking to my old, all categories subscription!!
haha though you are getting crankier as the months progress though, it’s hilarious to read your pieces all the time, why lie!!

  8. With this post opened in Instagram, the top of the page reads “Let’s be penpals… FOREVER…” because of how it’s truncating the site name. So I subscribed, obviously πŸ˜€

  9. I read every post via Bloglovin’, I assume that shows up in the stats as it brings readers to the site? I’ve started unsubscribing to SO much email stuff now, most shops have gone so I’ll stick with Bloglovin’ for now πŸ™‚

    1. Yes it does – Bloglovin’ and other readers will show all posts, though, so this was for the people who were already subscribing my email and getting annoyed with all of the pregnancy stuff!

  10. I read all your posts and really look forward to them. Keep on doin what you do girl youre good at it. Im looking forward to your pregnancy posts, im a bit well a big bit older than you but have shared your trials. You look after yourself x
